The Vaseline tire hack suggests applying Vaseline to the valve stem to stop air leaks, especially in winter. While it can temporarily form a seal, it’s not a reliable solution. Cold weather naturally lowers tire pressure as air contracts, and underinflated tires can affect performance and safety. As the tire warms up during driving, Vaseline softens and spreads, breaking the seal and attracting dirt. It can also degrade rubber valve stems over time and may even reach brake components, reducing braking effectiveness. Instead of using Vaseline, it’s better to replace worn valve stems, use silicone or dielectric grease (which won’t damage rubber), install valve caps with O-rings, check tire pressure regularly, or replace the valve core if needed. These options are safer and more effective long-term.
