A sore throat can be caused by viruses or bacteria, and the symptoms can sometimes look similar. Viral infections are common and may occur along with cough, runny nose, or other cold symptoms. Bacterial infections, such as strep throat, may cause a sudden sore throat, fever, swollen glands, or pain while swallowing.
Antibiotics do not treat viral infections and should not be taken without medical advice. An ENT specialist can assess your symptoms and, when appropriate, recommend testing to determine whether a bacterial infection is present.
Rest, adequate fluids, and soothing warm drinks may help relieve mild throat discomfort. Seek medical attention for severe difficulty swallowing or breathing, persistent high fever, dehydration, or symptoms that are worsening or not improving.
