OVER DENTURE
An overdenture is a type of removable dental prosthesis that fits over natural teeth, tooth roots, or dental implants. It provides improved stability, support, and retention compared to conventional dentures.
Types of Overdentures:
1. Tooth-Supported Overdenture – Placed over preserved natural teeth or roots that have been modified (e.g., root canal treated and reduced in height).
2. Implant-Supported Overdenture – Supported by dental implants, providing better retention and stability, especially for edentulous patients.
Advantages of Overdentures:
Prevents bone resorption by maintaining underlying tooth roots or implants.
Provides better proprioception compared to conventional dentures.
Improves chewing efficiency and speech.
Reduces pressure on soft tissues, preventing sores.
