ROOT CARIES
Root caries is a type of dental decay that affects the root surfaces of teeth, typically occurring in older adults or those with gum recession. Unlike coronal caries (which affects the crown of the tooth), root caries develops when the softer root surface (cementum) is exposed due to receding gums and is attacked by bacteria.
Causes of Root Caries
1. Gum Recession – Exposes the root surface, making it vulnerable.
2. Plaque Bacteria – Streptococcus mutans and Lactobacillus break down carbohydrates, producing acids that demineralize cementum.
3. Poor Oral Hygiene – Leads to plaque accumulation.
4. Dry Mouth (Xerostomia) – Reduced saliva flow decreases natural remineralization.
5. High-Sugar Diet – Encourages bacterial growth.
6. Frequent Snacking – Increases acid production.
7. Medical Conditions & Medications – Some medications reduce saliva flow, increasing caries risk.
