✅ Main Reasons Why Upper Wisdom Teeth Get Cavities
1. They are the Last Teeth in the Mouth
Because they are located too far back, it becomes difficult to brush and floss properly.
Food easily gets stuck there, but we cannot reach well while cleaning.
Result: Plaque accumulates → Bacteria grow → Cavity forms.
*2. Most Wisdom Teeth are Partially Covered by Gum
Often, the upper wisdom tooth does not erupt fully.
A gum flap may partially cover it (called operculum).
This creates a trap where food and bacteria hide.
3. They Touch the Opposing Lower Wisdom Tooth in a Harmful Way
Upper wisdom teeth often hit the lower wisdom tooth in a tilted or unaligned way.
This makes two problems:
Food lodges in between
There may be micro-fractures due to abnormal bite pressure
Both accelerate cavity formation.
4. Wisdom Teeth Often Erupt Tilted
Instead of coming straight, wisdom teeth may erupt:
Outward toward the cheek
Inward toward the jaw
At an angle
This creates tight, uncleanable spaces.
5. The Shape of Wisdom Teeth is Complex
They have:
Deep grooves
Narrow fissures
These trap food very easily—especially sugars and starch.
6. Saliva Flow is Less in the Back Area
Saliva normally protects teeth by neutralizing acids.
But salivary circulation is lower in the back region → Higher cavity risk.
