Why does glucose rise during workout?
Today we will talk about why your blood sugar spikes while you workout. This is a very common question and today you'll find the answer. People workout to increase their heart rate and keep themselves healthy but at the end they end up finding their blood sugar high.
To find the answer to this, we first need to know about other hormones that deal with blood sugar. We have cortisol and adrenaline which are the stress hormones which do not get along with insulin. The job of cortisol is to provide sugar to your body when you are under stress. Your body doesn't know if you are in a stressful situation like climbing a mountain or working out in an air conditioned gym. Thus, your body doesn't know the difference and is trying to supply that sugar so that you do not run out of it. When you are insulin resistant, the effect of cortisol is doubled or tripled up. As a result your insulin cannot keep up. Thus, insulin ends up not doing a good job because you have a lot of cortisol in your body and your muscles are also trying to consume the sugar. If your body is making more sugar than it is consuming, you end up having an excess of blood sugar. Same thing happens with adrenaline which is a flight or fight response hormone. When you exercise, your body doesn't know if you're working out for fun or for your survival.
