What is EBUS Bronchoscopy?
Endobronchial ultrasound bronchoscopy (EBUS) is a procedure used to diagnose various types of lung disorders such as inflammation, infections, and cancer. EBUS bronchoscopy is performed by a pulmonologist and involves inserting a flexible tube through your mouth and into your windpipe and lungs. The EBUS scope, which is similar to but smaller than a colonoscopy device, has a video camera with an ultrasound probe attached to create local images of your lungs and nearby lymph nodes in order to accurately locate and evaluate areas seen on x-rays or scans that require a closer look.
What Are the Risks?
Although EBUS bronchoscopy is very safe, there is a very small risk of complications, which could include bleeding from the biopsy, infection after the procedure, low oxygen levels during or after the procedure, and a very small risk of lung collapse. As with any medical procedure, these complications could also include bleeding from the biopsy. All of these complications are treatable, but they may necessitate a brief hospital stay on the same day as your procedure.
