What causes sleep disorders?
Various factors can contribute to sleep problems. Although the causes vary, the end result of all sleep disorders is a disruption or exaggeration of the body's natural cycle of slumber and daytime wakefulness. The following are eight factors:

- Medical (such as asthma)
- Psychiatric (such as depression and anxiety disorders)
- Environmental (such as alcohol)
- Working the night shift (this work schedule causes "biological clocks" to malfunction.
- Genetics (narcolepsy is genetic)
- Medications (some interfere with sleep)
- Ageing (approximately half of all adults over the age of 65 have a sleep disorder). It is unclear whether this is a normal part of aging or the result of medications commonly used by the elderly.
