How are sleep disorders diagnosed?
If you suspect you have a sleep disorder, talk to your doctor about your symptoms. They can perform a physical exam and assist you in identifying sleep problems. Because some illnesses can cause sleep disturbances, your doctor may order tests to rule out other conditions.
If your doctor believes you have a sleep disorder, they may refer you to a sleep disorder clinic. A sleep specialist will examine your symptoms and may advise you to have a sleep study.
A sleep study, also known as a polysomnogram (PSG), is a test that transmits and records specific physical activities while you sleep. For some patients, a sleep study can be performed at home (home sleep apnea testing). The recordings are converted into data, which is then analyzed by a qualified doctor to determine whether you have a sleep disorder.
Many common sleep problems can be treated with behavioural interventions and a focus on proper sleep hygiene.
