EBUS bronchoscopy: What You Can Expect
Depending on when your procedure is scheduled, your doctor may request blood work before your procedure, and you may be asked not to eat or drink after midnight the night before. You will be given an IV on the day of your procedure to administer medications that will keep you comfortable throughout the procedure. Anesthesia is sometimes used to put you completely to sleep. Your doctor will place the camera through your mouth to begin the EBUS bronchoscopy once you are comfortable or asleep.
Your doctor will examine and obtain lung samples, typically using a small needle, using a camera, and an ultrasound. You may experience a mild cough and sore throat, but both should go away within a day.
You will typically be allowed to leave after a brief period of observation because EBUS bronchoscopy is an outpatient procedure.
