CHRONIC GOUT
Gout is an acute inflammatory arthritis because of deposition of monosodium urate crystals. Acute Gout is severe but self limiting condition but when untreated chronic gout can result in tophus formation (as seen in above image) which is actually urate crystals deposited in the intra-articular joint space. Treatment of gout is important to prevent such chronic crystal deposition and further avoiding joint damage. Treatment of acute and chronic gout differs and depends on the frequency of attacks, presence or absence of tophus, age of patient and certain risk factors.
