Pregnancy and autoimmune diseases/Arthritis.
We get to see many patients who have apprehensions regarding pregnancy with current Arthritis or other autoimmune diseases like SLE.
Many a times these patients are told that they can never have babies.
All this information in completely wrong. Most autoimmune diseases to a large extent does not affect fertility or have very mild effect on fertility.
The main concern with these diseases are once a patient conceive, periodic monitoring is required in patients by a Rheumatologist for healthy outcome. This is required mainly in two Rheumatic diseases APLA(Rheumatic disease with blood thickening) and Sjogrens syndrome(Dry mouth and dry eye disease).
Also many patients leave their medicines fearing adverse effects on baby, but medicines prescribed during this period are such that no harm is done for baby as well as even during breast feeding they can be continued.
One should meet a Rheumatologist for right advise. We have seen many patients with healthy pregnancy outcome in Rheumatic diseases.
