Landmark appeal for Post Office scandal
Patricia Owen's conviction for theft in 1998, based on flawed evidence from the Post Office's Capture software, is set to be reviewed by the Court of Appeal in a significant development. The Capture software, used in 2,500 branches, has been linked to numerous wrongful convictions. An independent investigation revealed that the software likely caused financial discrepancies, leading to unjust prosecutions. Neil Hudgell from Hudgells Solicitors highlighted the importance of this case, noting that Owen consistently maintained her innocence. The Criminal Cases Review Commission (CCRC) has referred her case, citing an abuse of process, and is currently reviewing 30 similar cases. The Post Office has acknowledged past failings and is cooperating with the CCRC to rectify these injustices.
