On Saturday, I contacted him because my car was making unusual drivetrain-related noises. He initially said it might be the driveshaft but couldn’t diagnose it without hearing more noise, then on Sunday insisted it was the control arm. About 20 minutes after I said I needed to think before deciding, he texted that I owed a $75 diagnosis fee if I didn’t proceed —never mentioned upfront. After I pushed back twice, he admitted it was his mistake and said I didn’t have to pay.
I agreed to move forward with the repair for $530. While the control arm did need to be replaced, after replacing it the clunking noise remained — coming from the driveshaft, which he suspected but had not mentioned since Saturday. He admitted the issue was above his level of expertise and asked me to consult my regular mechanic, stating the car was still safe to drive. That night, I texted him my mechanic’s confirmation that it was the universal joints in the driveshaft. The next day, upset that I had paid $530 and the noise persisted, I texted him again, but he did not respond.
Because of his misdiagnosis and unwillingness to disclose his inexperience, I am now facing driving risks, potential towing, and possible rental costs — especially since my regular mechanic is in another city. Charging hundreds for the wrong repair, attempting undisclosed fees, and failing to communicate afterward is unacceptable. Honesty, transparency, and accountability are essential in any service — and none of them were present here.
