Swollen Jaw / Facial Swelling
Facial swelling originating from a dental source is a clinical emergency that should never be managed at home with pain relievers or warm compresses alone. Swelling of the jaw, cheek, or floor of the mouth indicates that a bacterial infection has moved beyond the tooth or gum and is now occupying the soft tissue spaces of the face and neck. In severe cases, dental infections have been documented to progress into the airway — a life-threatening complication known as Ludwig's angina. At Dentist of Aventura, we evaluate facial swelling with a comprehensive clinical examination and three-dimensional imaging when indicated to map the extent of the infection and identify its source. Treatment depends entirely on the findings: some cases are managed with drainage and targeted antibiotic therapy in our office, while others require coordination with an oral surgeon or hospital-based care. What we do not do is minimize a patient's concern or recommend a wait-and-see approach when swelling is present. Patients presenting with dental-related facial swelling — whether they come from Aventura, Sunny Isles Beach, Hallandale Beach, North Miami Beach, or Bal Harbour — are seen as a clinical priority. If your face is swollen and you believe it is related to a tooth or gum problem, come in today. Swelling of this nature does not resolve without professional intervention, and acting quickly is always the right decision.
