Oral conscious sedation, also known as โprocedural sedation and analgesia,โ is the process by which sedatives are administered before a dental procedure with the express purpose of helping a patient to relax. Patients remain awake and responsive during dental treatment, and no pain should be experienced. The use of a sedative is simply to reduce dental fear and anxiety, and help the patient feel comfortable and relaxed through out a procedure.
In most cases, conscious sedation is considered โlightโ or โmoderateโ but can also be referred to as โsleep dentistry,โ despite the fact that patients remain conscious during the procedure.
