West Indian Drywood Termite Infestation Manly 4179
It has been reported in the media and on Government websites there is a concerning issue of an infestation of an exotic termite: West Indian Drywood Termite
This termite evaded Bio Security and entered Australia through infested timber products such as furniture, picture frames, ornaments. It has subsequently spread in parts of Queensland through the movement of infested timber.
This breed of termite has wings able to fly short distances, extending its infestation reach. Infesting timber in new areas begins a new colony hosting thousands of termites. A colony can exist for up to 10 years.
The key feature of the West Indian Drywood Termite is that it only needs moisture in the timber that is its food source. They don’t contact with soil or any other moisture source.
Any structural timber, dry wood, timber fences, timber in boats, furniture, power poles are known food sources for these termites.
