One of our clients had stored items on an exposed concrete slab against the outside wall of their premises. This actually becomes an ideal location for termites to create a new home for themselves.
When the clients removed the stored items they saw the tell-tale sign of termites - a mud tube. Termites create a mud tube for them to transit to and from their food source and their nest. There it was in plain sight.
Termites had come up through a cold joint and over the exposed slab edge to the wall.
How long does it take to build mud tubes? Not long - they can have a tube completed in a matter of days but can take many weeks to be strengthened and adapted for regular use.
We always advise our clients not to cover exterior walls or exposed slab edges with stored goods.
