Should I insulate my walls with injection foam?🤔 This has been a common question from clients recently and figured it deserved some attention. We work with all types of insulation and every application. We do this because every home is different and is in need of different repairs to become energy efficient/comfortable. So when we see a company promoting any one product or area as the cure all, we often are left with images of snake oil salesman. “Pay only $99/month!” (You know, for the next 4-5 years).
Most insulation materials on the market will all perform the same if correctly installed. The foam lobbyists will argue that theres is a superior product. While foam is great, other more economical materials installed CORRECTLY will perform just as well. At sometimes a third of the cost.
I’ve see claims that the majority of hot air
You’ll do more to reduce air leakage by sealing your rim joist and caulking windows then insulating all of your walls with some “premium injection foam”.
Insulation performance in walls is also limited due to thermal bridging between walls studs. Framed walls leave an un insulated grid all around your home. Adding injection foam or any insulation into your walls will do nothing to decrease thermal loss from these weak spots. Our preferred method for new construction and remodeling would be to fully wrap your exterior walls before siding to provide a continuous barrier and eliminate thermal bridging.
