With everyone spending much more time indoors these days I’ve come up with some quick electrical safety checks you can carry out in your own home.
1. Check your smoke alarms replace by date - Smoke alarms have a sticker on with a replacement date. After 10 years they become less sensitive and it’s time to upgrade.
2. Check your smoke alarm sounds – press the test button once a month
3. Check switches and sockets for damage and cracks – The smallest crack can develop quickly into damage that exposes inner live conductors.
4. Check your RCD trips - At the fuseboard press the ‘TEST’ button on your RCD to check its doing its job properly. It should trip (switch off) and then allow you to reset it.
5. Check your light fittings for signs of thermal damage - Yellowing and in extreme cases blackening to and around light fittings can indicate they are over heating. This can be due to loose connections, lamps with too higher wattage or the fitting being in use much longer than its designed for (Old!)
If you have any questions or if the checks have made you aware of a potential problem please get in touch.
