Did you know that here in the UK we have one of the safest plug sockets in the world?
Here's why:
- The plug sockets have internal shutters which block access to the live and neutral terminals when nothing is plugged in, that's why the earth prong is longer than the others; it opens the shutters as you push the plug in!
- The live and neutral prongs have insulation covering half of their length, this is to the reduce the risk of being shocked when a plug has only been pushed in halfway.
- The UK plug is the only one with an on-board fuse, this gives a second level of protection other than your fuseboard breakers and can prevent fires and electrocution.
- The wiring is designed in such a way that if the flex is pulled from the plug top, the live and neutral wires will disconnect first and the earth last.
