🏠 Starter Homes in the Spotlight
Florida and Indiana lawmakers are moving to limit local land-use rules that make it harder to build smaller, more affordable “starter homes.”
📍 Florida: Senate Bill 948 would cap minimum lot sizes, ease parking and setback rules, and speed up approvals aiming to address soaring prices in a state with the highest share of million-dollar listings.
📍 Indiana: House Bill 1001 expands options for duplexes, ADUs (“granny suites”), and mixed-use housing, while reducing local review requirements.
Supporters say these bills cut red tape and help ease housing shortages. Critics argue they weaken local control and could reshape neighborhoods without community input.
With housing affordability under pressure nationwide, states are increasingly treating housing as a regional problem not just a local one.
💬 What do you think: smart reform to boost affordability, or too much state overreach?
