- Asymmetry: If two sides are asymmetrical, it could be a sign of melanoma.
- Border: Benign moles generally have smooth borders, while melanomas have irregular or notched borders.
- Color: Take action if the mole has multiple shades of brown, black, or tan. Melanomas may also become red or blue.
- Diameter: While benign moles are smaller, melanomas tend to be about ¼ inch or larger.
- Evolving: If changes such as itching, crusting, or bleeding develop – it could indicate a melanoma.
