This is a very nice Example of a painted dial Grandfather clock this type of clock became popular starting in about 1820 through to around 1865, they where often taller & wider than the brass Dial clocks, they where mostly 8 day but there are 30hour examples. The clock movement was prety much the same as the older brass dial clocks except they where mounted on a cast iron false plate at the back of the dial, there are many of these clocks about & the dials are a work of art in there own right & like this one pictured they look rich in there dark mahogony case this clock benifits from automation ie the ships at the top of the dial move with the tick of the clock, this is nice feature and it comes in all manner of things from rolling moons to people on a sea saw something a bit different
