Condensation can cause significant problems during the winter months if homes aren’t kept well-ventilated so if you’re an Edinburgh landlord, make sure to watch for signs of condensation in your property.
Condensation occurs when excess moisture in the air which settles on cold surfaces such as windows and walls. It is one of the most common forms of damp found in buildings and can cause wallpaper to peel and mould to form.
Left untreated, a condensation problem can have more serious implications such as wood rot or damage to brickwork.
Good ventilation is the best way to prevent condensation forming - leaving windows open or using extractor fans when cooking or showering. Tenants should also be advised to ventilate the property well when drying clothes indoors as this is a major contributor to condensation.
Early signs of a condensation problem are water droplets collecting on windows, mould spots on walls and other surfaces (even clothes and soft furnishings), peeling paint or plaster and a musty smell.
Checking for these tell-tale signs during regular property inspections can prevent long-term issues developing. For more advice on avoiding problems with condensation, talk to one of our property experts.
