With the last cold front that came through and steady temperatures that were well below freezing, there has been a lot of pipes breaking.
Here are a couple tips.
First of it is important to amake sure you know where your shut off for your whole home is and how to shut it off👍
The next tip is for any water lines that are in the elements , not in a conditioned area..outdoor shower, pipes in a unheated space or outside wall. Is to make sure they are insulated. You can get insulation at a plumbing or department store peel and stick it together. I like to use tape to keep it nice and tight and make sure it’s got the best chance.
The other thing you can do when it gets un seasonably cold especially with pipes and fixtures on our side walls , is to let them drip. Both hot and cold should be dripping, a lot of people assume that a hot line won’t freeze but it will freeze. It is important you make sure the drain is flowing good and not backing up if you do drip faucets.
The last tip is find your shut offs for your hose bibs and out side showers and shut them off and drain down. In new homes in Carolina beach, Oak Island and Wrightsville beach the hose bibs have a shut off for both the hot and cold for out door shower as well as the cold supply for the hose bibs. Many times it is in the utility closet or the location of the water heater but sometimes they may be under a lavatory sink or for a older home in a craw-space.
