Skunk Season Is Here: What You Need to Know About Mating & Kits
As we move through mid-March in Brantford and the surrounding areas, skunks are in the middle of their peak mating season. If you are noticing more skunk activity in your yard or hearing strange clicking and chirping sounds under your porch or shed, it’s not just a coincidence—it’s the start of the annual cycle.
The Lifecycle You Need to Know
• The Mating Phase: Mating generally occurs from late February through March.
This is when males travel long distances to find mates, and females begin scouting for secure, warm, and dark places to den.
• The Pregnancy: Female skunks have a gestation period of approximately 60 to 75 days.
• The Arrival: Most litters, which consist of 4 to 7 "kits," are born between early May and June.
• The Dependency Period: Skunk kits are born blind, deaf, and helpless. They will remain in the den with their mother for 6 to 8 weeks before they start following her out on foraging trips. They typically aren't fully weaned until mid-summer.
