The 2026 Raccoon Calendar
Raccoons don't just wander into homes by accident; they are on a mission for a "nursery" den.
• January – March (Mating Season): Females are scouting for warm, secure dens. Your attic, chimney, or the space under your deck are prime real estate.
• Late March – May (Peak Birthing): This is when the first litters arrive. Most kits are born during this window.
• June – July (Mobile Kits): The babies begin to follow their mother outside. This is often the safest time for exclusion (sealing the house), as they can leave on their own.
🔍 Signs You Have a "Nursery"
Baby raccoons (kits) don’t sound like adults. If you have a family living in your home, look for these specific red flags:
1. Chirping Sounds: Kits make a unique, high-pitched chattering or bird-like chirping, especially when the mother returns to the den.
2. Nightly Thumping: Adult females (weighing up to 20 lbs) create heavy dragging or thumping noises as they enter and exit.
3. Visible Damage: Raccoons can rip through roof shingles, soffits, and vents. If you see "bent" metal or torn plastic on your roofline, they've found a way in.
