WHAT IS HYDROSTATIC TESTING?: A leak test that allows plumbers to determine if there is or is not a leak on the sewer system.
HOW IS THE TEST PERFORMED?: With a hollow, rubber test ball the plumber creates a controlled stoppage at the edge of the foundation by filling the test ball with air. Then, a garden hose is placed in the open cleanout and the sewer system is filled with water. Once the system is full, we turn off the water and remove the garden hose and visually monitor water levels.
If water levels remain, no leak exists. If water levels drop, a leak exists.
WHAT ARE COMMON MISCONCEPTIONS ABOUT THE TEST?: The hydrostatic leak test does not employ the use of any chemicals or pressure. The hydrostatic sewer test does not cause damage to plumbing. Furthermore, the hydrostatic leak test is the only conclusive test to determine if a sewer system has any leaks.
