One of the most interesting facts about the founding of Canton Township in 1834 was the name itself. Like Nankin and Peking, Canton Township was named after a city in China when many Americans living in Michigan were fascinated with China. Also, the Federal Government ruled that a township couldn’t be named after an existing town with the same name. Of the three, only Canton has retained its original Chinese name.
