Originally a part of the Ecorse Township, Southgate incorporated in October 1958. It earned its name because it was the south entrance to the Detroit Metro area. Today it is a town of roughly 30,000 inhabitants who celebrate their community drive and spirit. Nearby cultural activities include a community theater, the Fox theater, the Henry Ford museum, and the Heritage Days Festival.
