Trenton, Michigan used to have a less memorable name until 1847 when city elders named it after a type of limestone found in a local quarry. Since 1816, Trenton has played an important role in the industrialization of the Michigan territory and later the state, becoming a minor commercial transport hub for the 19th-century Michigan economy. Today, manufacturing, healthcare, retail, and education are the leading sectors of the local economy, although retail has struggled to recover.
