A CBCT or cone beam computed tomography scan is a type of dental X-ray that creates a three dimensional image of the tooth or teeth being examined. This type of X-ray allows your dentist to see dental structures, nerve paths and bone in the craniofacial region. Here at Austin Center for Endodontics we use our CBCT machine to curate more precise treatment plans for previously treated teeth, fractured teeth, and teeth with complex anatomy. We can also provide our patients with CD copies of this scan to be taken to Oral Surgeons, Periodontists, or Orthodontists ex cetera, if referred.
A CBCT is a very quick process and requires little to no preparation, we only ask that the patient removes jewelry, glasses, and hearing aids. The process is identical to that of a panoramic X-ray during which the C-shaped arm of the machine rotates around the patients head 360 degrees, taking approximately 30 seconds. While there is always risk associated with radiation exposure for this type of X-ray, the benefits of an accurate diagnosis far outweigh that risk. Give us a call at 512-879-1350 with any questions about CBCT scans.
