So what exactly are Refractory Panels and do they serve a function in my fireplace?
If you have a prefab fireplace you have refractory panels on the sides and bottom of the firebox. The panels are made to withstand the heat of a fire and they add strength to the fireplace insert. They are not simply a cosmetic piece of the insert.
According to the Chimney Safety Institute of America refractory panels should be replaced when a nickel on end can fit into the crack or when the surface is abraded more than 1/4".
