Tip 6: Did You Put the Fire Out Before You Went to Bed?
Sitting around the fireplace at night with family or friends has been a tradition for people for generations. This is a place you are creating memories for everyone to talk about for years to come, but there is one thing you should never do, and that is going to bed while the fire is still burning.
Doing this could lead to a fire caused by an ember that came out of the fireplace, or a piece of firewood that shifts during the fire and lands on something combustible. Another risk is if you haven’t had your chimney swept there could be a creosote buildup in the chimney, and we know it is very flammable and could ignite starting a chimney fire. All of these things can (and do) happen when you are most vulnerable, while you are sleeping.
Always make sure the fire is out before bed, and make sure your smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors are working properly. Also, have your chimney swept and inspected by a CSIA Certified Sweep® to remove any creosote or potential hazards that could be in the chimney before burning.
The days of having a fire with family and friends in your home should be memorable ones, so don’t take unnecessary risks like letting a fire burn unattended.
