Tip 3: Smoke Detectors? Carbon Monoxide Detectors? Chimney Safety?
As the weather gets colder and you are preparing for the burning season don’t forget to do one important thing:
Make sure your smoke alarm and carbon monoxide detectors are installed and working properly.
You should check them monthly, and change the batteries every 6 months. A good rule of thumb is to change the batteries every Daylight Savings Time. You can also put reminders on your calendar in your phone, and when that date arrives so will your message to check them.
The smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors are important to have because there could be a flow reversal in the chimney without you knowing due to pressure, or weather-related issues.
When this occurs, the products of combustion could start to come back down the chimney instead of exiting to the outside atmosphere.
The alarms and detectors will give you added protection in case something like this happens. If you experience this, contact a CSIA Certified Sweep® for options to help correct the issue.
