⏳ How Long Do Modern Large Appliances Actually Last? A Technician’s Honest Take
I’ve been repairing appliances for 12+ years. Old fridges used to run 20–25 years, but today’s machines follow different rules.
People often ask: “How long should my fridge, washer, or dryer last?”
Here’s the honest answer.
❄️ Refrigerators — 8–12 years
Some last longer, but not many. Modern units rely on sensitive electronics and lighter materials. I often see major Samsung and GE issues around year 7–8.
🧺 Washing machines — 6–10 years
Water and vibration wear them out fast. Bearings, leaks, clogs, electronics — all common failures. Older Bosch and Miele were tanks; newer models need more attention.
🔥 Dryers — 8–12 years
Belts, heating elements, sensors, airflow problems — the usual reasons they fail. Units pushed too close to the wall overheat much faster, especially in Bay Area homes.
🔍 Why shorter lifespans?
Because appliances are smarter — and more delicate. More sensors, thinner circuit boards, complex modules. Convenient? Yes. Long-lasting? Not always.
The good news: proper installation, ventilation, and simple yearly maintenance can add 2–4 extra years to almost any major appliance.
