Bed Bug Prevention Tips
What You Can Do?
Bed bugs are excellent hitchhikers. They don’t fly or jump, but they’re highly skilled at hiding and traveling unnoticed. Whether you're returning from a trip or bringing home secondhand items, a few simple precautions can help protect your home or business.
Travel Precautions
When staying in hotels or rentals, keep luggage in the bathtub and inspect mattress seams, headboards, luggage rack (if using) and furniture joints. Avoid placing clothes in drawers or on upholstered furniture.
After travelling, unpack immediately. Do place luggage on furniture or carpet. Inspect belongings, and wash all clothing on high heat. Store suitcases outside in large sealed bag. Inspect again after 2 weeks.
Purchasing Used Items
Bed bugs can hide in furniture and second-hand items; store these outside until inspected. Avoid second-hand upholstered furniture when possible. Look for small, flat, reddish-brown bugs about the size of an apple seed, black or rust-coloured spots, shed skins, and white eggs in clusters. Use a flashlight and stiff card to scrape along seams, cracks, and crevices carefully.
