Sexual Orientation and Gender Discrimination has become illegal under Federal law when it comes to employment law. It is not illegal for an employer to terminate, fail to hire, pay less, harass, reduce pay, create a hostile work environment to an employee or potential employee because of that person's sexual orientation or gender. Just until this decision, there was no such law. This is a major change in employment law.
Previously, some laws existed but only on the local level. Now that this is a Federal employment law violation, with increased penalties, the law will be uniformly applied. It will take time for each district to define the limits to this case but many new employees will now be protected from discrimination. This is a land mark decision from the Supreme Court of the United States and will make changes to employment law for a long time to come.
