Types of EV Chargers
Before diving into the installation process, it's important to understand the different types of EV chargers available. The most common types are:
Level 1 Charger (120V):
Voltage: 120 volts (standard home outlet)
Charging Speed: Slowest charging option (typically adds about 3-5 miles of range per hour)
Installation: Requires no special installation if you have a standard 120V outlet available. Simply plug your EV into the existing wall socket.
Ideal For: Drivers who have short daily commutes or don't mind slow charging overnight.
Level 2 Charger (240V):
Voltage: 240 volts (like an electric dryer or oven)
Charging Speed: Much faster than Level 1 (typically adds 15-40 miles of range per hour)
Installation: Requires a licensed electrician to install a dedicated 240V circuit and possibly a new outlet.
Ideal For: Most EV owners who need a faster charging solution. This is the most common type for home charging.
Level 3 Charger (DC Fast Charger):
Voltage: 480 volts (direct current)
Charging Speed: Very fast, capable of charging an EV to 80% in 30 minutes or less.
Installation: Level 3 chargers are typically not suitable for residential use due to their high power requirements, cost, and space. They are primarily found at public charging stations or commercial properties.
Ideal For: Public charging stations or businesses.
