In this fast-paced world of working hard and playing hard, we’re all too familiar with the time-saving allure of pre-packaged meals and all-inclusive trips. But no one appreciates a quick turnaround more than malicious actors on the internet. In a newly released report on digital threats during the first half of 2024, global AI cybersecurity company, Darktrace, found that many of the prevalent threats deployed in the six-month period relied heavily on what’s known as malware-as-a-service (MaaS).The pre-packed, plug-and-play malware, consisting of malware strains from previous years, and newer ones that can evolve and evade detection, has enabled even inexperienced attackers to carry out potentially disruptive attacks, says the report. According to BlueVoyant, an enterprise cybersecurity company based in New York City, the continued success of old malware strains indicates that many organizations still have significant vulnerabilities in their security environments. This could be due to several factors, including outdated systems, unpatched software, or a lack of comprehensive security measures. And that will only accelerate the sophistication of malware-as-a-service, posing ongoing challenges for cybersecurity professionals and requiring advancements in defense strategies, forecasts Critical Start, a national cybersecurity services company.
