With artificial intelligence (AI) at the nexus of all we do, from summarizing lengthy reports, to creating images at lightning speed, a new study out of MIT highlights concerns that overuse of AI tools might be degrading our thinking capabilities. That degradation is the equivalent of using GPS so much that you forget how to read a map. Just as calculators replaced memorizing multiplication tables, the implication with AI is we don’t really need to think. When we offload critical cognitive tasks entirely to AI, our muscles for those tasks can begin to atrophy, leading to cognitive dumping. Why fact-check a report if AI “knows?” Why brainstorm, if AI can generate a list of ideas in seconds? The human brain is inherently efficient & prone to taking the path of least resistance, but this outsourcing of thinking can lead to a decline in analytical skills, critical judgment & creative problem-solving. So, how do we harness the immense power of AI without dulling our cognitive gears? The answer lies in engagement, not abdication. Think of AI as a supremely talented intern, not your replacement & like any intern, AI needs supervision, guidance & a sharp eye on the final product. That means staying mentally present, not just delegating & hoping for the best. The MIT study serves as a wake-up call that over-reliance on AI can dumb us down. The imperative is clear: use your AI, but don’t lose your sense of perspective in the process. Your intellectual muscle mass depends on it.
