Many patient's come into my office being told they need a fusion of their ankle or big toe joint. Some have been recommended to have joint replacement surgery. The reason these procedures are recommended is that the joints are affected with arthritis of the foot and ankle. These procedures are intended to reduce the pain associated with the arthritis. The downside to them are in fusions you lose the motion in the joint. That can lead to other joints having problems down the road. In joint replacements there can be issues with the metallic or in some cases silicone joint , in where the implant can loosen and result in further surgeries. There are however newer options available to address arthritis and that is with cartilage replacement surgery of the foot and ankle. A big advantage with this procedure is that you burn no bridges with replacing the cartilage. I have presented these cases at scientific conferences showing a significant decrease in pain and an increase in range of motion . Come on in for a evaluation today.
