There are times when a surgeon is dealing with a bone that doesn't heal, or a fusion that does not fuse. Those situations are called non unions. There are many reasons why a bone will not heal. Smoking and poor circulation are the big ones. In the past we have had available in the operating room donated cadaver graft that helped heal the bone. However the gold standard is to take the patient's own bone and insert it into the non healed site with additional fixation. That was difficult in the past due to the need for a second large incision and not getting a lot of bone. Now with a tiny 5mm incision I can take 30cc of the patients own healthy bone and marrow using an innovative bone harvester from Avitus. If you are dealing with a non union, Charcot foot or ankle, a complex fracture or an at risk fusion, make an appointment today to see if you a candidate to have this done.
