Now that summer is here it is time to take out those nice sandals in warm weather shoes. You may notice with these types of shoes that you may be getting more foot pain than usual. Many times it is not the shoe that is the problem but it is the foot that the issue. There are many foot conditions that can be exacerbated when wearing flimsy types of shoes. One in particular that we will be discussing today is hallux rigidus (also sometimes referred to his hallux limitus). This is a condition where there is stiffening of the big toe joint. The stiffening of the joint is typically from an arthritic condition that there is a loss of cartilage. That loss of cartilage leads to pain and inflammation of the big toe. As can be seen in the picture above if you can have a large spur with even sometimes a small fragment of bone floating in the joint.
