Jaw joint discomfort
Does your jaw click or crunch? Do you feel pain in your temple or ear? The causes of this pain can be divided into four main groups:
1.Sleep-related factors – jaw fatigue in the morning, a feeling of tightness or clenching after sleep.
2. Bite issues and temporomandibular joint (TMJ) dysfunction – clicking or popping sounds, grinding, pain when opening the mouth, difficulty chewing on one side.
3. Muscle and joint overload – dull, aching pain in the jaw, temple, or ear that tends to worsen by the evening.
4. Stress and emotional tension – involuntary jaw clenching and increased pain during stressful periods.
Symptoms of jaw joint discomfort often overlap or feel similar. Without an examination, it’s difficult to pinpoint the exact source of the problem. A dentist will assess the condition of the joint, teeth, and bite to identify where the overload is coming from, then select the most appropriate treatment strategy:
Custom night guard – protects teeth in cases of bruxism.
Bite and tooth contact adjustment – when improper alignment is present.
Management of muscle overload – recommendations to relieve tension in the chewing muscles.
Referral to related specialists – if sleep issues, neurological factors, or other contributing conditions are suspected.
Why is it important to see a dentist?
Because regardless of the root cause—sleep, stress, bite problems, or muscle overuse—the load ultimately affects the teeth and the jaw joint.
