The 2025 government proposals transform how Skilled Worker visas lead to permanent status. From July 2025, employers must meet higher salary thresholds and degree-level skill requirements (RQF 6). Meanwhile, the upcoming Earned Settlement model shifts ILR eligibility from a simple 5-year residence to a contribution-based assessment: permanent status will depend on continuous employment, earnings, good character, integration and English proficiency. Low-paid or lower-skilled visa holders may face longer routes to settlement. High earners could still qualify sooner — but only with sustained income and compliance.
