Malingering involves one intentionally producing or displaying false or exaggerated symptoms of a disorder for some type of gain. Motivations are often monetary gain, disability status, or evasion of legal consequences. As a legal nurse consultant, I am often asked to accompany injured clients to their IME or medical appointments. I also review medical records, provide timelines for pre-existing conditions, and assist plaintiff and defense firms in navigating the truth vs malingering. This article is a great example of malingering!
