Decreasing prolonged periods of immigration detention:
The British-Iranian solicitor, Seema Kennedy, has been recently appointed as the new immigration minister. The House of Common’s Human Rights Committee has been in dispute with the Home Office regarding the detainee time length being spent in the UK’s detention centre.
Different parties have suggested the Home Office to implement policies in minimising prolonged periods of detention on detainees. Seema Kennedy supports these committees and wants to make an impact on the overall immigration policy by decreasing the prolonged periods of immigration detention.
The reason for this is due to lengthy detentions having a detrimental effect on a detainee’s mental health and would therefore infringe their human rights. Having a decreased period of detention would encourage the Home Office in speeding up the process of cases and help cut down detention costs.
The committee will keep a close eye on whether Kennedy can help overturn the Home Office’s decision and propose a solution which would establish a set time limit for those in the UK immigration detention.
