Brexit updates:
With the first Brexit deadline of the 31st of October being increasingly unrealistic, the EU are preparing to sign off on a Brexit extension, until the 31st of January 2020. This extension is said to have a clause allowing the UK to leave at an earlier date if a deal is approved. It is said that this extension will be officially announced on Monday, following discussions between the French president and Boris Johnson.
The drafted agreement has suggested that a no-deal Brexit on the 31st of October is no longer an option, however until the document has officially been signed and released, these terms are subject to change. This is however, the first-time firm dates have been written into a document regarding the end of this Brexit saga. An EU declaration attached to the draft paper has stipulated that the bloc will not renegotiate this withdrawal agreement. The UK does now have an “obligation” to nominate a candidate to join the European commission, of which the prime minister has previously stated he would not put forward a nominee.
Donald Tusk, the European council president has been involved in lengthy discussions with EU leaders over the weekend period. It is said that the ambassadors of the EU27 are set to have a meeting on Monday to finalise this draft.
